What is Myofascial Release?

The fascia is a connective tissue which provides support and protection the muscular structure within the human body. This connective tissue can become restricted due to overuse, or inactivity, infection, or trauma. The result may be muscle tension, pain, restricted blood flow to the muscles.
It is important to understand that no one system of the body works independently of any other. So when you come into our office with a complaint we not only address your skeletal structure but we also consider the soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia, etc.) and, of course, the nervous system.
Myofascial Release technique is a nuero-musculo-skeletal approach that benefits all systems of the body ultimately through the health of the nervous system. We use a variety of techniques to treat your soft tissues including myofascial release technique (MFR), proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), and the similar post facilitation stretch (PFS) and post isometric relaxation (PIR). Don't be intimidated by these seemingly big words, the techniques are relatively simple, don't take a lot of time, and are most effective.

Our approach to soft tissue combines each of the above techniques because there are different variations and it usually involves your active participation. When working with muscles active participation utilizes different aspects of the neuro-muscular relationship making these techniques a superior approach to muscular rehabilitation. PNF is often used in the rehabilitation of stroke patients and muscular dystrophy patients.
